Prepare your Home for Winter

Why You Can Trust Us

Clean the Gutters

Since no water has passed through them for a while and especially due to leaves and other debris which have fallen into them, as winter approaches our home's gutters are probably clogged up, at least partially.
Taking all necessary precautions, climb up (even onto the roof itself if necessary) and remove anything which may block the flow of rain or melting snow water through the gutters.

Remember, clogged gutters do not drain water well enough, this may very well cause seeps and leaks, especially into the attic. once water has entered our house it, apart from water damage per se, there's the probability of mold developing.

Block any Leaks

As long as its dry out gaps and openings do not matter, except maybe for providing a way for "creepy crawlers" to enter. But once the wet season comes water and humidity will make their way in through any crack. It is essential to waterproof our home before any rain or snow fall.
Even a small leak may, over a period of time, allow a substantial amount of water in resulting in water damage and mold, these could be easily avoided if only we take measures to find and block any opening through which a leak may develop.

Improve Insulation

Better insulation inevitably means less expenditure on heating during winter. As a rule of thumb you want a minimum of 12 inches of insulation in your attic, if ceiling joints are visible you need to thicken the layer of insulation. When laying a new layer of insulation on top of an old one don't use the kind with a paper backing, this acts as a vapor barrier and may cause moisture build up in the insulation which may lead to mold.

Check your Furnace and Chimney

Just before winter is the right time to check and provide the necessary maintenance to your furnace and chimney. Replace or clean filters (dirty filters impede air flow), light up the furnace with open windows to allow the typical short lasting smell to dissipate. If the smell lingers you should call in a professional for a tune up.
Your chimney does not need to be swept every year, however it should definitely be inspected annually, just before winter, leaving enough time for cleaning it if necessary.

Another important precaution is to drain any water lines, such as those in the garden. Any pipes used during winter should be insulated to prevent freezing which may very well lead to bursting.
